The proposed Terafab project would be an extraordinary bet on AI hardware, bringing chip production, packaging and testing under one Texas roof. Its eye-catching size claim also depends on how “largest building” is measured.

Elon Musk’s planned $16.8 billion chip factory in Texas is being pitched as a project on a scale rarely seen in American manufacturing. SpaceX and Tesla say the Terafab facility in Grimes County would have more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space — meaning the factory is five times bigger than the world’s current largest building by one commonly used floor-area comparison.

The proposed complex matters because it would make chips for Tesla’s Optimus robots and Cybercabs as well as SpaceX’s planned space-based data centers. The announcement promises at least 3,000 jobs, but the enormous footprint, public support and still-limited construction details make the project’s path as notable as its headline-making size.

Terafab’s proposed Texas footprint

SpaceX announced Aug. 6 that Terafab would be built in Grimes County, north of Houston. Tesla and SpaceX describe it as a vertically integrated semiconductor operation, bringing manufacturing, packaging and testing of advanced logic and memory devices into the same facility.

The companies put the first-phase capital investment at $16.8 billion. The Wall Street Journal reported that the plant is intended to produce one terawatt of compute per year, an ambition that signals the project is designed around the heavy computing needs of artificial intelligence rather than conventional consumer electronics alone.

That distinction matters. Manufacturing advanced chips is only part of the process; packaging and testing can determine how quickly finished components reach the products that need them. Combining those stages could give Musk’s companies tighter control over a supply chain that has been strained globally in recent years.

Why the giant-building claim needs context

The most striking figure is the proposed 100 million-plus square feet of manufacturing space. For comparison, China’s New Century Global Center is widely described as the world’s largest building by floor area, at roughly 18.9 million square feet. On that measure, Terafab’s claimed footprint would indeed be a little more than five times as large.

But “world’s largest building” is not a single universal title. Buildings can be ranked by floor area, enclosed volume, total site area or another measure. Boeing’s Everett factory in Washington, for example, is often cited as the world’s largest building by volume.

There is another important caveat: Terafab is a proposed industrial complex, not a completed building. The 100 million-square-foot figure comes from the companies’ announcement and appears to describe manufacturing space across the planned facility. Until detailed plans, permits and construction milestones are public, it is best understood as a target rather than a finished physical record.

A factory built for Musk’s ecosystem

Terafab’s planned customers are close to home. SpaceX and Tesla say the chips will support Tesla hardware, including Optimus humanoid robots and self-driving Cybercabs, along with high-power computing systems for SpaceX’s space-based data-center ambitions.

That makes the announcement different from a traditional chipmaker opening a plant to sell broadly across the electronics industry. The immediate strategic value is likely vertical integration: designing, producing and deploying computing hardware within companies controlled by Musk.

Supporters can see that as a way to reduce dependence on outside suppliers and to speed development of AI products. Skeptics may note that designing cutting-edge chips and producing them at large scale are separate, capital-intensive challenges. The announcement did not spell out which chip technologies Terafab will make, who will provide key manufacturing equipment, or when commercial output would begin.

Grimes County’s jobs and incentives

SpaceX and Tesla say Terafab is expected to create at least 3,000 jobs, with many positions intended for workers from Grimes County and nearby Brazos County. The companies also point to potential construction work, supplier contracts and workforce-development partnerships as benefits of locating there.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott praised the project and said a $30 million Texas Enterprise Fund grant has been extended to SpaceX. The facility also qualifies under the Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation program, a state program created to attract large capital-intensive projects through tax incentives tied to investment and job commitments.

For the region, the upside could extend beyond direct employment. Large factories can pull in contractors, housing demand, logistics operations, utility upgrades and training programs. Those gains are not automatic, however. A project of this scale also raises practical questions about water, power, roads, housing availability and whether local workers can access the promised high-paying technical roles.

Texas is already central to SpaceX

Terafab would deepen SpaceX’s existing Texas presence. The company already operates Starbase near Brownsville, a Starlink factory in Bastrop and a rocket-development and test site in McGregor.

SpaceX says its Texas operations have generated more than 56,000 direct and indirect jobs since 2024 and have had an estimated economic impact exceeding $28 billion. Those figures are company estimates, rather than an independent accounting, but they show why state leaders view a new Musk-backed industrial project as a significant economic-development opportunity.

Grimes County offers available land, infrastructure access and proximity to large Texas markets, according to SpaceX. Those advantages help explain the choice of location, though a semiconductor campus at this scale will still require extensive coordination with utilities, local governments and workforce institutions.

The next test is execution

The Terafab announcement establishes the intended scale, investment and job target. It does not yet provide a public construction timetable, a production start date or a detailed breakdown of the proposed 100 million-plus square feet.

Those details will determine whether the project becomes a new benchmark for U.S. chip manufacturing or remains an unusually large industrial promise. For now, the central fact is clear: SpaceX and Tesla are proposing a Texas facility large enough to reshape the conversation about both factory scale and the infrastructure needed for the AI race.

The building comparison captures attention, but the more consequential measure may be whether Terafab can turn a $16.8 billion first phase into reliable chip output for Musk’s vehicles, robots and aerospace computing plans — while delivering the jobs and local benefits Texas officials are counting on.
