Panettiere’s death has prompted tributes to an actor whose career stretched from childhood commercials to defining television roles. Officials say an autopsy found no trauma, but the cause of death has not been announced.
Hayden Panettiere died at age 36, her father confirmed in a statement released Sunday night. The actor, best known for Heroes and Nashville, was found unresponsive at an apartment complex in Greenville, South Carolina, and authorities say the cause of death remains under investigation.
Her death matters beyond the immediate shock for fans: Panettiere had worked in Hollywood since infancy, built memorable roles across film and television, and had recently spoken publicly about rebuilding her life after difficult years.
Her father confirmed the loss
Skip Panettiere announced his daughter’s death in a statement provided through her representative. “It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” he said.

That family confirmation is central as reports and social-media posts circulate quickly after a celebrity death. It establishes that Panettiere has died, while leaving many medical details appropriately unresolved.
Panettiere was 36. She is survived by her daughter, Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, as well as her parents, family members, friends and colleagues.
Authorities say the cause is pending
The Greenville County Coroner’s Office said authorities received a 911 call at about 1:50 p.m. Sunday regarding a reported cardiac arrest at an apartment complex. According to the office, an acquaintance made the call after Panettiere was found unresponsive inside a residence where she had been temporarily staying.
Emergency responders attempted advanced cardiac life support measures, but those efforts were unsuccessful. Officials said she was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m.
An autopsy was completed Monday, according to the coroner’s office. It said no signs of trauma were found that would have contributed to her death, but the cause of death remains pending further investigation.
Greenville Police and the county coroner are investigating together. Police said their preliminary findings had not indicated foul play or suspicious circumstances. That is not the same as a final determination; investigators have not released a cause or manner of death.
From child actor to TV staple
Panettiere’s career began unusually early. According to her Television Academy biography, she appeared in television commercials at 11 months old and started appearing in daytime dramas, including One Life to Live and Guiding Light, when she was 4.
She went on to a broad run of film work, including Remember the Titans, Ice Princess and Bring It On: All or Nothing. Her voice was also featured in the animated film A Bug’s Life.
For many viewers, though, she became synonymous with Claire Bennet, the indestructible cheerleader at the center of NBC’s 2000s superhero drama Heroes. The character’s line, “Save the cheerleader, save the world,” became one of the show’s most enduring pop-culture markers.
Her later role as Juliette Barnes on Nashville showed another dimension of her work. Playing a young country star navigating fame, family and self-destruction, Panettiere earned two Golden Globe nominations and remained with the series through its six-season run.
Tributes focus on her talent
Colleagues began remembering Panettiere not only for recognizable roles but for the warmth they experienced working with her. Connie Britton, her Nashville co-star, posted photos from the set and described Panettiere as “bursting with brilliance, shining so bright.”
Matt Lanter, who worked with her on both Heroes and Commander in Chief, recalled the laughs they shared on set and called her death “just too young.” Emma Roberts, who appeared with Panettiere in Scream 4, wrote that her friend was “so loved” and would be missed.
SAG-AFTRA also issued a statement mourning the loss of a member whose professional relationship with the union dated to 1994. Viola Davis, who co-starred with Panettiere in the 2016 film Custody, praised her talent and reflected on the resilience Panettiere had shown publicly.
The early tributes reveal why news of her death has resonated so widely. Panettiere had been a visible performer for more than three decades, yet many peers described her in personal rather than industry terms.
Her recent candor shaped her legacy
In recent interviews and in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, Panettiere spoke openly about postpartum depression, addiction and the consequences those experiences had for her life and family. She said she had made the difficult decision to give up custody of her daughter to her former partner, Wladimir Klitschko, in 2018.
Those disclosures were her own account of a difficult period, not an explanation for her death. With the official cause still pending, it is important not to connect past health or substance-use struggles to the current investigation without evidence from authorities.
Panettiere also spoke about the devastating 2023 death of her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, from an undiagnosed heart condition. In a 2024 interview with NBC’s Today, she described the profound grief of losing someone who had been present for life’s major moments.
Her later public work was marked by an effort to speak plainly about recovery, parenting and grief. That honesty helped distinguish her from the more polished celebrity narratives that often surround actors who began working as children.
What remains unknown now
The confirmed facts are limited but significant: Panettiere died at 36; her father confirmed the death; South Carolina authorities are investigating; and the preliminary autopsy finding reported no trauma contributing to her death.
The cause and manner of death have not been released. Until the Greenville County Coroner’s Office completes its work, claims going beyond those confirmed details should be treated with caution.
For audiences who grew up watching Panettiere move from family films to primetime television, the loss brings renewed attention to a career that was both long and unusually varied. Her best-known characters were fearless and outspoken; the tributes now point to an actor whose influence reached well beyond them.
