Klitschko’s tribute focused not only on the loss of his former partner, but on the lasting responsibility of helping their daughter Kaya hold onto her mother’s memory. Panettiere’s cause of death has not been released as authorities continue their investigation.
Wladimir Klitschko, the father of Hayden Panettiere’s child, expressed “profound shock and grief” after Hayden Panettiere, a 36-year-old actress, died. In a statement shared Aug. 18, Klitschko mourned his former partner and addressed what her loss means for their 11-year-old daughter, Kaya.
Klitschko said Panettiere left the world “far too soon” and promised he would speak to Kaya about her mother with respect. His response puts a deeply personal family reality at the center of a public loss that has renewed attention on Panettiere’s career, her struggles and the questions that remain around her death.
Klitschko’s message centered on family
Klitschko shared his statement in an Instagram post alongside an older beach photograph of himself, Panettiere and Kaya. He wrote that their family was going through a period of “profound shock and grief,” a phrase that quickly became central to coverage of his reaction.
The former heavyweight champion said Panettiere had remained an important part of his life even though they were no longer a couple. He remembered her professional accomplishments while also acknowledging that her life had included difficult periods away from the screen.
“Nothing will erase the times we shared or the place she had in our lives,” Klitschko wrote, according to USA Today. The wording avoided speculation and instead emphasized grief, shared history and the family connection that remained after their relationship ended.
A promise made for Kaya
The most consequential part of Klitschko’s tribute concerned Kaya, the daughter he and Panettiere welcomed in 2014. Klitschko holds full custody of Kaya, who lives in Europe with him, according to USA Today.
He said he would always talk to Kaya about Panettiere with respect and ensure that she remembers who her mother was. That pledge gives the statement a different weight from a conventional celebrity tribute: it is also an assurance about how a child’s relationship with a deceased parent will be carried forward.
Panettiere had spoken publicly in recent years about the pain of being separated from her daughter and about trying to prioritize Kaya’s well-being while seeking help for her own struggles. In a July interview with parenting publication Momé, she described regular FaceTime contact with Kaya and said relinquishing custody had been an incredibly difficult decision.
Their relationship had a long history
Panettiere and Klitschko’s relationship unfolded over much of the 2010s. The pair became engaged in 2013 and had an on-and-off relationship for nearly a decade, according to USA Today.
They came from very different public worlds: Panettiere was known for acting roles including Heroes and Nashville, while Klitschko became one of boxing’s most successful heavyweight champions. Their relationship drew regular tabloid interest, but the custody arrangement and their shared daughter kept their lives connected after the romance ended.
Klitschko’s statement did not revisit the details of their breakup or custody history. Instead, it framed Panettiere as a significant person in the family’s life and recognized her as Kaya’s mother first.
Her death remains under investigation
A representative for Panettiere confirmed her death to USA Today on Sunday, Aug. 16. Her father, Skip Panettiere, said in a statement that the family was sharing news of the “tragic passing” of their beloved Hayden.
Authorities have not publicly released a cause of death. USA Today reported that the Greenville Police Department and Greenville County Coroner’s Office in South Carolina were investigating the circumstances after Panettiere was found unresponsive at Judson Mill Lofts in Greenville.
That distinction matters. Early reports have included unverified or incomplete details about the emergency response, but no official cause of death had been announced in the reporting available. Until investigators release findings, claims assigning a reason for her death should be treated with caution.
A career shaped by early fame
Panettiere began acting as a child and built a long career across television and film. Her work made her recognizable to several generations of viewers, from her early television appearances to her role as cheerleader Claire Bennet on Heroes and country singer Juliette Barnes on Nashville.
She had also been candid about addiction, trauma and the intense pressures she associated with early fame. In her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, released months before her death, Panettiere wrote about substance use, abuse and difficult family experiences.
Those disclosures have shaped much of the public response to news of her death. For some, they underscore the need for compassion around people whose private struggles become public entertainment. For others, they are a reminder that openness about recovery does not make anyone’s life or loss simple to interpret from the outside.
What remains clear and unclear
Klitschko’s statement offers one clear point amid a fast-moving story: Kaya’s memories of Panettiere will be a priority for her father. His tribute focused on honoring a person who was both a major actor and a central figure in their family.
Much remains unknown, including the official cause and circumstances of Panettiere’s death and whether authorities will release additional information. The family has not publicly detailed funeral or memorial plans.
For now, the public record is defined less by rumor than by the messages from those closest to her: a father’s grief, a former partner’s remembrance and a promise that an 11-year-old daughter will continue to hear about the mother she lost.
