Spurs’ reported interest in Jules Kounde points to a search for flexibility and quality in defence. Yet Barcelona regard the French international as an important player, leaving a major gap between interest and an achievable transfer.
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly preparing a €65 million bid for Jules Kounde, the Barcelona defender, as Spurs explore options to reinforce their back line. The proposed move matters because Kounde can cover both right-back and centre-back, but Barcelona’s reported desire to keep him could make a transfer far harder than the fee suggests.
Neither Tottenham nor Barcelona has announced an agreement, and there is no indication that Kounde has decided to leave. For now, the story is a transfer report with a clear obstacle: Spurs may admire the player, but Barcelona appear to see him as part of their squad rather than an asset they are eager to sell.
Why Spurs are looking at Kounde
Reports carried by Barca Blaugranes and Barca Universal say Tottenham have identified Kounde as a potential defensive addition and could make an offer worth €65 million. The appeal is straightforward: he has experience playing at a high level in more than one position across the defence.
A player who can operate on the right and in the middle gives a club options during a long season. That flexibility can be particularly valuable when injuries, tactical changes or departures force a team to reshuffle its back four.
The reports also link Tottenham’s interest to uncertainty around their current defensive group. Cristian Romero’s future has been the subject of transfer speculation, while Barca Universal also pointed to unresolved questions around Djed Spence.
That does not mean either player is certain to leave. It does explain why Spurs could be monitoring established replacements rather than waiting for a vacancy to become official.
Kounde offers more than one role
Kounde’s versatility is the central reason this link has traction. He is widely used as a right-back but is also capable of playing centrally, allowing a manager to adjust the balance of a defence without necessarily making a substitution.
For Tottenham, the attraction would not just be adding another defender. It would be acquiring a player who could help solve different problems: defending wide areas, building from deeper positions and covering central defensive absences.
That kind of profile often commands a premium. A €65 million proposal, if one is formally made, would reflect both Kounde’s ability and the scarcity of defenders with elite-level experience in multiple positions.
There is a counterargument, however. Versatility can make a player harder to price and harder to replace. The more jobs Kounde can do for Barcelona, the less incentive the Spanish club have to let him go.
Barcelona’s stance is the main barrier
Both reports frame a sale as unlikely at this stage. Barca Universal said Barcelona view Kounde as an important member of Hansi Flick’s squad, particularly because of his value at right-back and centre-back.
Barca Blaugranes similarly reported that Kounde had expressed a desire to remain at the club. If that assessment is accurate, Tottenham would need more than a strong opening number to change the situation.
Barcelona’s decision would likely depend on several factors that remain unknown: the club’s transfer priorities, whether it has a replacement lined up, the financial terms of any offer and Kounde’s own position as the window develops.
The reported figure is therefore better understood as a possible starting point than a signal that a deal is close. A fee can attract attention, but it does not automatically overcome a club’s sporting plans or a player’s preference.
Romero links add another layer
The story has taken on extra intrigue because Barcelona have also been linked with Tottenham captain Romero in separate speculation. Barca Blaugranes noted that Barcelona have been connected with Romero and Pedro Porro, creating an obvious opening for theories about a wider negotiation.
At present, though, there is no reported agreement involving a swap, a package deal or formal talks between the clubs. Transfer windows regularly produce overlapping links involving the same teams, and not every connection develops into a negotiation.
Still, the overlap helps explain why Kounde’s name has surfaced around Spurs. If Tottenham anticipate changes in defence, a player of his experience and adaptability would be a logical target.
Barcelona could take the opposite view: keeping Kounde may be even more important if there is uncertainty elsewhere in their defensive plans.
A big fee would not settle it
From Tottenham’s perspective, a €65 million bid would demonstrate serious intent for a proven international defender. It would also test Barcelona’s willingness to turn down a substantial offer for a player entering a period of heightened transfer attention.
From Barcelona’s perspective, accepting such a bid would only make sense if the club believed it could replace Kounde’s contribution without weakening the squad. Selling a multi-position defender can create two recruitment problems instead of one.
There is also the player’s leverage. A move becomes more realistic when the buying club, selling club and player all see a benefit. The available reports suggest Tottenham’s interest is genuine, but they do not establish that Barcelona or Kounde are ready to move in the same direction.
What would make this deal real
The next meaningful development would be evidence of a formal Tottenham offer or direct negotiations with Barcelona. Until then, the reported €65 million figure remains an indication of interest rather than a completed step in the process.
Barcelona’s public and private stance will be decisive, as will Kounde’s intentions. If he remains committed to staying and Flick’s team continue to regard him as a key option, Spurs may need to look elsewhere.
For now, this is a revealing transfer link rather than an imminent move. Tottenham’s reported pursuit underlines the value they place on defensive versatility; Barcelona’s reported position underlines why prising Kounde away may prove difficult.
